Feudo di Santa Tresa – Frappato 2016
Producer: Feudo di Santa Teresa
Feudo di Santa Teresa Frappato 2016 has a vivid red colour with gentle purple tones. The bouquet is fresh, with lots of red berries and delicate sweet spices. The palate is smooth, yet with a very lively acidity, but well balanced, with a spicy, long lasting finish.
Mainly planted in Sicily, it’s wild strawberry and cherry character is sure to delight. Light to medium bodied, the sweet jamminess of the fruit is brilliantly offset by tangy acidity. There’s a faint hint of cinnamon too, tannins are soft, it’s hugely enjoyable. The locals enjoy this red lightly chilled with fish dishes.

Wine of the Week – Joanna Simon, ‘It would be hard to come up with a red wine more full of the joys of spring than this juicy, jewel-bright, organic red made from Sicily’s Frappato grape. It’s the Frappato, grown barely 5 miles from the sea, that gives the wine its quintessential character: vibrancy, suppleness, an astonishing aroma and taste of strawberries and a suggestion of cherries and herbs. It’s light on its feet without being a real lightweight (a median 13% alcohol) and there’s no discernible tannin and no oak; so nothing gets in the way of the fruit purity, freshness and soft, dry finish. It can be drunk cool and doesn’t need food but goes well with cured meats, tuna, pizza, pasta or chicken.‘ JoannaSimon.com, March 2017 (2015 vintage)
88 Points – Tom Cannavan’s Wine-Pages.com, ‘Sicily’s Frappato usually delights and so it is with this light, fresh and buoyant red, a touch of ink and earth adding some seriousness, but it’s about the wild strawberry lift and freshness. Dry on the palate, there is some intensity here, the finish showing a little more tannin and seriousness than some, but it remains joyous, buoyant and fruit-filled – just as it should be.‘ July 2016 (2014 vintage)
Wine of the Week – JancisRobinson.com, ‘A light red with cracking energy and such cheerful refreshing fruit that it’s like a dose of youth in a glass. It’s the liquid equivalent of being five years old with a bucket, a spade and a big sandy beach.‘ Tamlyn Currin, October 2015 (2014 vintage)
Silver Medal – Berliner Wein Trophy 2015 (2014 vintage)
More from the producer
The name Santa Tresa derives from the local Sicilian pronunciation of the name Teresa. The Feudo di Santa Tresa estate has around 50 hectares of vineyards based on a rich, red soil which has ideal characteristics: a 40-100 centimetre surface layer of light red sandy loam on a well-drained limestone base, which helps to guarantee a constant supply of water. The rich volcanic soil is highly fertile and the harsh sun is tempered by the cooling sea breezes, making this a vine grower’s paradise. The natural quality of the vines and grapes is so exceptional that minimal intervention is the order of the day and organic production the natural result. The grapes are hand-picked in the cool early hours of the morning in order to avoid overheating of the berries and after fermentation the wine is aged in concrete vats to preserve the freshness so characteristic of the local Frappato grape. Contains Sulphites.
In our corner of Sicily, Vittoria in the south east of the island, Frappato is the locals’ favourite red wine. In the hot summer days, we enjoy it lightly chilled, often with fish. The perfectly balanced, elegant Frappato reflects the harmony between our winemaking and nature.
Frappato – the perfect red for fish!
In our corner of Sicily, down in the South East, Frappato is the grape of choice and has been grown in the countryside around Vittoria for centuries.
Often a revelation to wine drinkers, Frappato is elegant and refreshing – surprisingly more delicate than many of the muscular reds of Sicily, yet full of character. Santa Tresa Frappato could be termed a “modern classic” – a modern interpretation of an antique style of wine – with all the character of the Frappato grape variety, made in a really modern, approachable way. In Vittoria, we often drink it slightly chilled, with grilled fish.
At Santa Tresa we respect and encourage nature which in return allows us to produce great wine that really is more than just organic, it’s also unique!
Smooth and elegant, Wild strawberries, with touches of spice, In harmony with nature, Organic wine
